The Role of the School Counselor:
  • Counsel individuals and small groups to help meet identified needs

    FAFSA
    This link will take students and parents to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) website. The FAFSA is a form that can be filled out annually by prospective and current college students, that determines a student's eligibility for receiving federal, state, and institutional aid.

    FAFSA-PIN
    Both parent and student will need a Personal Identification Number or PIN in order to complete the FAFSA. Visit this website to set up your PIN.

    Online College and Career Readiness Resource Center
    This is a comprehensive tool for college and career development in Texas.

    Texas CARES Online
    Comprehensive career information system designed to guide students through the college and career decision-making process.

    Texas Work Prep
    An online job search tutorial. A visit to this site will allow students to take an online course on tips for finding a job or being successful on the job. Each course takes less than two hours. These courses are free!

    • Complete the onetime Applytexas.org college application. Plan for December 1st deadline. Each has an application fee except junior colleges.
    • Scholarships: Each college/university has their scholarship applications on their website.

    • Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) after your parents file their income tax in the spring.

  • Juniors will have the opportunity to take the ASVAB test in the fall semester.  Also, college-bound students should register to take the ACT or SAT by February of their junior year.

  • Sophomores will have the opportunity to take the PSAT in the fall semester (October). The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a program co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation.  It is a standardized test that provides first-hand practice for the SAT.  It also gives students a chance to enter the National Merit Scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.
